Families rarely leave home with more than they can carry. What is missing is often mundane and absolutely essential: something to sleep on, something to cook in, something to wash with.
Our non-food item kits typically include blankets and sleeping mats, cooking pots and utensils, buckets and jerrycans for water, soap and basic hygiene items, and mosquito nets. The exact contents are adjusted to the season and to what the household already has.
Women and adolescent girls displaced without warning face a particular indignity that is easy to overlook. Dignity kits include sanitary materials, underwear, soap and a torch — small items that make an enormous difference to a woman's ability to move safely and take part in daily life.
Households are identified with community leaders and verified before distribution. Distribution points are chosen to keep travel short and safe, particularly for women, older people and people with disabilities, and we run post-distribution monitoring to check that items arrived, were appropriate and were actually used.
