Education and training

Years of disruption have kept many children in the North West out of the classroom. The cost is not only academic. A child who is not in school is more exposed to recruitment, early marriage, child labour and trafficking.

Getting children back to learning

We support displaced and vulnerable children to return to school through help with fees, uniforms and learning materials, and through catch-up and accelerated learning for those who have missed months or years.

Safe and functioning learning spaces

We support the rehabilitation of learning spaces and the provision of water, sanitation and furniture, so that a school is somewhere a child can actually concentrate — and somewhere parents feel able to send a daughter.

Supporting teachers

Teachers in crisis-affected communities are asked to do far more than teach. We support training in psychosocial first aid, inclusive teaching and classroom management for large, mixed-age groups.

Vocational and skills training

For young people whose formal schooling has ended, we support vocational and income-generating skills training — tailoring, catering, mechanics, agriculture and small business skills — linked where possible to a start-up kit so training leads to an actual livelihood.
